Write Things: On writing for your biggest fan
Sep 05, 2024Hello writers!
It's Thursday and I wanted to share a thought on the writing process.
Observant readers will also notice that I've landed on "Write Things" for a title. Thanks to everyone for your feedback.
On to today's idea!
Idea: On the writing process
Everytime you sit down to craft a story, consider writing it for your biggest fan.
Who is that? It's YOU!
We can love our characters, our plot, or the real life lessons and experiences we're sharing with our readers, but if we don't love how we've written our story, then we won't love writing them.
Anyone who's gone through the crafting of the first draft of a manuscript knows that there's rough patches in that journey. There's lots of reasons for this - but I'll save that for a future newsletter.
By writing our story in manner that we personally enjoy, we're not only going to find the process more rewarding and entertaining, but we're also going to develop our own unique style, one that that will be infinitely sustainable, regardless of the opinions of others.
Then, when you create a story that your readers love, one that you decide to publish and find exceptional success with, you won't sit there and worry about what your readers will think of your next book idea.
You won't worry if it's good enough, if it's different enough, the same enough, original enough, etc, etc.
You'll just write another story that YOU love to read and, odds are, your readers will love it too.
Afterall, the creative process is a personal one. Writing a personal or fictional story is an intimate form of self expression.
Therefore, an authentic creation is one that is made for no audience other than oneself.
That's how we create something new.
That's how we create something original.
That's how we create the stories we are here to tell.
And have a blast doing it.
Inspiration: Quick-Write Prompt: "This, I believe to be true."
Set a timer for four minutes and begin writing on the prompt above. It may be personal, fictional, or something inbetween.
You may choose to focus on a piece you're currently working on or something new.
As always, I'd love to hear what you wrote! Reply to this email or send it to [email protected]. I personally reply to each one received before next Thursday.
Invitation: To entertain yourself.
In your writing this week, ask yourself what you'd like to see happen next in your story.
Try to embellish a personal story to the point that it makes you chuckle. Or cry.
Erase your reader. Get rid of the audience. And entertain yourself with your writing this week.
