Write Things: On envy and inspiration
Oct 03, 2024Hello Writers,
Amateur writers often compare themselves to others, especially in writing groups.
This isn’t right or wrong—it just happens.
Let’s talk about it.
Idea: On Inspiration
When we compare ourselves to other writers, we're evaluating, judging, and noting differences. We often label one as "better" and one as "worse."
This tendency becomes more automatic and frequent the more we doubt our own talents and abilities.
This isn’t inherently good or bad—but it’s an opportunity.
If you catch yourself labeling another writer as "better," that’s a valuable message.
For example, maybe an author uses imagery in a way that feels beyond your reach. Or they extend metaphors beautifully, or their dialogue flows effortlessly.
What matters isn’t what they do; it’s your reaction to it.
If you feel envy, jealousy, or self-judgment, that’s your signal that something special is happening!
You, my friend, aren’t in envy.
You’re being inspired.
You’re drawn to something in their work—something you admire and love.
This isn’t about competition—it’s about aspiration.
Inspiration is a gift. It pushes us to try new things, take creative risks, and raise the bar for everyone.
If you’re stuck in comparison or envy, that’s just your inner critic hijacking this natural, powerful process.
Pause. Breathe. And remind yourself—you’re inspired, and that’s the end of the story.

Pay attention! Your preferences can guide the development of your unique writing style.
If you're going to write, why not love what you're writing?
When you like something, find ways to bring it into your own work.
Can you create your own memorable character? Be funny? Craft a beautifully immersive scene?
This week, I invite you to stretch yourself with your writing. Try something new, something you love.
Maybe you’ll create something that inspires someone else.
