Write Things: On the Write Kind of Love

mindset Feb 13, 2025

Hello writers,

I figured, with tomorrow being V Day, why not dive into the topic of love?

I think there’s a lot we can learn from it.

Idea: On Mindset

I feel the most blessed and grateful when I experience love.
Whether I was designed by God, an evolutionary force, or something in between, it certainly feels as though I’ve been hardwired to enjoy love. And if that’s true, then my guess would be that it’s to my benefit to seek it out.

Do you love writing? The feeling of losing all sense of time and space in the creative flow? Of having a story practically fly out of your fingertips?

What do you experience when you’ve created something that you’re proud of? Of getting something just right—maybe getting it so right that you can hardly believe you wrote it!

What happens when someone reads your writing and loves it?

Personally, I am hard-pressed to replicate how much I love being in the process of writing.

So it breaks my heart when I see writers give up their love affair with their stories—choosing to deprive themselves and their readers of this experience.

Remember, every reader on this planet has, at one point or another, said they loved a book they’ve read.

So the next time you doubt your ability or worthiness to write, remember that the act of writing does not require permission, accreditation, or any other stamp of approval.

The act itself is one of love. It’s an opportunity to enrich your life and, if you so desire, the lives of those you share your stories with.

The next time the inner critic has you convinced to give it up, just ask yourself: Do I love writing?

If the answer is yes, you are a writer. So write.

Is March a good time to dive into this love affair?

I’m dedicating myself to a small group of writers for the next 10 months. If you love writing, if you have a dream of finishing a project, I’d love to be in your corner for the entire process.

Invitation: "An urge to speak"

Set a timer for four minutes and write continuously on the prompt above. This week, lean into the images, feelings, or ideas that feel important. Afterward, decide whether to revise, continue, or leave it as is.

Forward this email to someone and ask them to do it too! Then share what you’ve written. Sharing imperfect work is a powerful antidote to the poison that is our inner critic.

Did you know you can still purchase the Self-Guided version of my Enhance Your Storytelling course? It’s getting a major upgrade very soon, and anyone who buys the course before it’s released will get this upgrade for free!

Invitation: To enjoy the process

When you’re writing, give yourself permission to have tunnel vision.

Yes, creating a manuscript, getting it edited, and putting it out into the world is a significant process. But that doesn’t mean you need to worry about all of that, all at once.

Just write—give yourself permission to love the experience. It’ll improve not only your mood but your writing as well. I guarantee it.

And when you’re done with the story, then you can ask yourself, What’s my next step?

I promise you that if you just focus on that next step, and then the one after that, you’ll get where you want to go.

And you’ll love the journey getting there.

If you feel called to write, then someone in the world needs your story. Get to it.

Happy writing,
