Write Things: On the perfect story vs. the next story
Aug 08, 20243 Thoughts on Mindset:
1. Many writers I work with believe, on some level, that the reception of their first book or work will define their future success and self-worth as an author, causing them to set near-impossible expectations for the quality of the writing and story.
2. Worrying about our work's reception can hinder creativity, ignite the inner critic, and prevent us from finishing and sharing our work, ultimately limiting our growth and the number of works we put out into the world. (this is a powerful source of procrastation and the cause of endless cycles of editing/revising)
3. Instead of striving for our perfect story, we can focus on creating and completing our next story; writing free from concern about reception helps us write more authentically, creatively, and to enjoy the process, and ultimately increasing the chances of publishing a successful story.
3 Inspirations:
1. Quote - "Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art." - Andy Worhol
2. Quick Write Prompt - "A redo"
Set a timer for 4 minutes and allow yourself to write something personal or fictional inspired by the prompt above. For maximum value, don't let your pen or finger tips stop typing - just let it flow! You may choose to expand on it into a larger piece or you may not. You may choose to share it or not. If you'd like someone to share your writing with, join me and other passionate writers in The Write Authority.
3. Question - What does your character regret?
Next Step:
Try writing or revising until you feel your piece captures what you were trying to get across - what you remembered or imagined. Use only your own enjoyment & satisfaction with the writing as a compass to determine when it is complete. Then, move on to the next scene, chapter, or story.
Your writing journey does not have to be a lonely one. Nor does it have to be filled with self-doubt, inner criticism, or frustration. It can be light, fun, and transformative. If you're a beginner or seasoned writer who's looking for professional support and connection, book a free 15 minute call with me here or send me an email at [email protected]. Whether we decide to work together or not, I'd love to hear your story and offer you a potential next step in your own journey.
If you feel called to write, your stories will have a postive impact on your life and those of your readers. You'll never know how large or how many lives you'll touch until you share them.
Until next time,
